Goldenegg Fashion Innovation

Goldenegg Fashion Innovation ‘Contribution to Irish Fashion Award’ John Rocha
By Jo LavelleNo commentsMarch 24, 2010

John Rocha’s spring/summer collection wowed audiences and re-affirmed the judge’s decision that the popular designer be this year’s recipient of the Contribution to Irish Fashion. With a career spanning 25 years in the fashion industry this year, John Rocha has developed his own distinctive style, constantly working and improving each season with new fabrics, techniques, and design. This season’s collection is inspired by such diverse sources as the colours of a Sean Scully painting, the enduring love symbolised in the traditional Celtic Claddagh, the work of Alexander Calder and just a touch of ska.

Furtura Fair

Futura Fair February 2010

Futura Fair took place at the RDS Dublin on February 28/2 March 2010.

Beaming sunshine welcomed Buyers and Exhibitors to the event and all breathed a sigh of relief that the snow had not hampered their attendance.

The Fair proved a success for all new areas introduced for the first time this season. Lingerie had lots of brands to offer and will no doubt be even more successful for the August event on 15/17.

The contemporary area included brands such as Lipsy, Hunters & Gatherers, Motel and Savuka and the Fair proved a great success for them.

We were very pleased to welcome the French Pavilion offering many seductive and existing brands to the Irish marketplace. Each brand attracted the attention of the Irish Buyers over the course of the Fair.

Our long established brands experienced a good flow of buyers over the 3 days with Sunday exceeding their expectations.

Carol McKeown of Gina Bacconi said that on the Sunday, she did not stop writing orders until 6pm and hardly had time to take a break!

Kelly Craig of accessory brand Bardot said ÒFutura has expanded our customer base in Ireland. We had a successful and productive show and we look forward to the autumn FairÕÕ.

Ken Spencer of Icon Fashion Accessories said his debut at Futura proved very successful. ÔÕI achieved my objectives and had the added bonus of taking good orders at the showÕÕ.

Futura Fair will take place August 15/17, 2010.

Epoch - Vintage, Recycled Fashion and Design Boutique, Dublin

Epoch is about one-of-a-kind pieces that make a statement and last through all the seasons. We are into fashion that is creative and inventive. Epoch is about a new era of fashion that can be frivolous and affordable without being disposable. We offer an alternative to the poorly made, mass-produced range that pervades high street fashion, and a chance to collect unique pieces, hand-produced by designers or preserved from decades past. Our vintage is the real thing - we don't sell vintage replicas. Our new clothing is original, chic and ethically produced.

Our stock range includes: a dazzling collection of high quality vintage pieces, hand-picked for their signature design and capacity for re-invention; designer classics; revamped clothing; clothing and accessories which have been made from recycled materials; and clothing which has been made independently and is sweatshop free.

Our retail unit is small but it represents the face of a much bigger project. Beyond just selling clothes, our aim is to promote great design in Ireland and eco-friendly, sweatshop-free and independent fashion.

Epoch is Ireland's first independent recycled fashion boutique. The unique collection of vintage, recycled and independent fashion is the only one of its kind available in Dublin.

In celebration of this Perk Up! Vintage & Revamp are giving a 20% discount in The Loft, Powerscourt Townhouse all weekend –just mention ‘Fashion Evolution’ when making a purchase to avail of the offer!

‘FASHION EVOLUTION’ is an awareness campaign that will focus on ethical and environmental issues within the Irish and international fashion industry. In this time of economic hardship, Fashion Evolution looks to lighten the load by offering entertaining and engaging alternatives to consumers of fashion, through a series of events, from a national clothes swap to a public exhibition of Irish design and interactive seminars, including:
· CRAFTERNOON TEA -This full day of fashion workshops, combined with music and art will allow the public to be part of the fashion process and take home work of their own, showing that it’s easy and fun to be sustainable.
· Café Conference –a cafe style seminar with a heavyweight line-up of Irish and international speakers for those with an interest in the fashion industry.
· The Irish Premiere of China Blue – Shot clandestinely at a blue jeans factory in Southern China, where a 17-year old Jasmine and her friends work around the clock for pennies, China Blue reveals what international retail companies don’t want us to see: how the clothes we buy are actually made.
· An Evening with Patricia Roberts – Come to sit, knit and listen to Britain’s most iconic knitwear designer speak about her designs and reviving knitting in the 21st century.
· National Swap Day Saturday 2nd May – As clothes swapping sweeps the land, Fashion Evolution is encouraging everyone around the country to breakout of our consumerist throw -away culture, to spring clean those wardrobes and throw their own clothes swap party.

Rosie O’Reilly, one of the event co-ordinators for ‘FASHION EVOLUTION’ and passionate ethical fashion expert said: “The current economic climate has forced a re-think of spending habits and a return to frugality and creativity in fashion. This year’s event will put a huge focus on educating and empowering the public through workshops and talks. We want to encourage consumers to get active and have fun.”

Ireland’s largest one day charity dress sale – Buy My Dress - returns on May 20th with same-day events happening in Dublin (Royal College of Physicians, D 2), Cork (Cork School of Music, Union Quay) and Galway (Meyrick Hotel, Eyre Square) from 10 am – 9pm with an admission fee of €10.

The Down Syndrome Centre’s award-winning campaign began in 2009 with the charity inviting Irish women of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds to donate a lightly-used dress which they no longer wore to help them reach their target of selling 1,000 dresses in a day. Their efforts resulted in almost 1,500 dresses being collected and sold; 35K raised for the charity and the title of Fundraising Campaign of the Year awarded to Down Syndrome Centre.

Buy My Dress extends its reach in 2010 with concurrent events taking place in Dublin, Cork and Galway and welcomes Kellogg’s Special K as its title sponsor. Peter Mark will once again allow the public in Dublin, Cork and Galway to use its salon network as drop-off points for dress donations and Unislim will be supporting the event by running an in-class dress collection for members.

In addition, a large number of credit unions in Dublin, Cork and Galway have agreed to act as drop-off points for dresses and will leave a branded Buy My Dress collection bag in the corner of their outlets (see www.buymydress.ie for a list of BMD drop off points).

The charity will be approaching companies with large female workforces to collect dresses in the workplace and independent boutique owners to make a donation from old stock.

The event received popular support last year from many of Ireland’s well-known women including An Tanaiste, Mary Coughlan, Minister Mary Hanafin, Senators Fiona O’Malley, Ivana Bacik and Frances Fitzgerald, Amy Huberman, Victoria Smurfit, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Mary Black, Marian Keyes, Lisa Cannon, Lisa Fitzpatrick, Elain Crowley and Nuala Carey.

Buy My Dress will once again be appealing to Ireland’s “ladies in the limelight” to show similar support and all those who donate, corporates, boutiques and well known people will be listed on the event website at www.buymydress.ie
